1. The main UL flame retardant ratings include CM, CMG, and CMX.
CM = Commercial Grade; CMG = General Purpose; CMX = Restricted / Residential.
1.1 CMP - Plenum Cable (UL910)
This is the highest UL fire safety rating for cables, tested via the Steiner Tunnel Test with an 87.9KW gas burner for 20 minutes. Flame shall not spread beyond 5 feet, peak optical density ≤ 0.5, average density ≤ 0.15. CMP cables are used in air return and plenum systems, approved in the US and Canada.
1.2 CMR - Riser Cable (UL1666)
A commercial-grade cable tested on a vertical shaft with a 154.5KW burner for 30 minutes. Flame shall not reach the top of a 12 foot shaft. Used for vertical and horizontal cabling between floors.
1.3 CM - General Purpose Cable (UL1581)
Tested on an 8 foot vertical tray with a 20KW burner for 20 minutes. Flame must self-extinguish without reaching the top. Used for horizontal wiring within the same floor.
1.4 CMG - General Purpose Cable (UL1581)
Similar to CM, approved in the US and Canada, used for horizontal wiring within a single floor.
1.5CMX - Residential Cable (UL1581, VW 1)
A restricted-use cable tested with a 30,000 BTU/hr burner: 15s on, 15s off, repeated 5 cycles. Residual flame ≤ 60s, damage ≤ 25%. Used for single runs in homes and small offices.
1.6 LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) Cables
LSZH cables produce minimal smoke and no halogen gas in a fire, greatly reducing toxic hazards and improving survival rates.They must meet three key requirements:
Flame retardance: IEC 60332-1 (single cable) or IEC 60332-3C (bunched cables).
Smoke density: Light transmittance ≥ 60% in a closed test.
Low toxicity/ halogen-free: Acid gas and halogen emission tests at 800℃ and 935℃.
