Create a favorable operating environment to avoid accelerated aging and damage to cable insulation. Cable trenches and cable tunnels shall be equipped with effective drainage facilities, such as shallow drainage ditches and water collection wells, with automatic start-stop pumping units to prevent water accumulation and keep the interior dry.
The longitudinal drainage gradient of cable trenches and tunnels should not be less than 1% to 2%, and at least greater than 0.5%, to prevent the ingress of water, corrosive gases or liquids, and flammable liquids or gases. Cable tunnels should generally adopt natural ventilation. When the air temperature inside the tunnel exceeds 40℃ to 50℃ under normal cable load, a combination of natural exhaust and mechanical exhaust may be used. Fans of the ventilation system shall be interlocked with fire detectors so that air supply can be automatically stopped in case of fire. Cable tunnels shall not be used as air intake ducts for ventilation systems.
Practices that impair cable ventilation and heat dissipation shall be avoided, such as keeping cable compartment doors normally closed, enclosing cables with partitions, and fully sealing gaps in cable trench covers. Furthermore, fully enclosing cables makes routine inspection impossible, preventing timely detection of cable faults.
